Reviving Koper’s Historic City Quarters

Reviving Koper’s Historic City Quarters

Koper will dedicate three Thursdays in August, September and October to the so called Quarter Festival – a vibrant celebration of the city’s former districts.

Organised by the Municipality of Koper and the Institute for Youth, Culture and Tourism Koper, as part of the European project Terra Gothica Incognita co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund under the Interreg Slovenia–Croatia programme, the festival aims to revive the historic neighbourhoods that once shaped the city’s character and to strengthen community ties.

From the 11th century until the mid-20th century, Koper’s eleven city quarters were the beating heart of daily life – lively hubs for gatherings, trade and crafts. The festival will rekindle this spirit with three unique events held in the squares of former contrade:

  • 28 August – Gortanov trg (Velika vrata/Porta Maggiore)
  • 18 September – Prešernov trg (Kopenska vrata/Ponte)
  • 2 October – Carpacciov trg (Pristanišče/Porto)

Each Thursday gathering will highlight the best of its quarter, with local restaurateurs, artisans and merchants presenting their creations. At the heart of each square a long community table will invite visitors to share food, stories and moments of connection.

With its blend of food, culture, music and memory, the festival offers not only a revival of Koper’s historic city quarters but also a celebration of community and belonging.
