Beating the Heat: Refreshing Summer Ideas Across Slovenia

When the heat is on, Slovenia offers the perfect cool-down. Whether you're wandering historic towns, adventuring below the surface, or soaking up forest shade, you’ll find plenty of ways to stay comfortable and inspired — even during the hottest days.

Hydration Comes Naturally – Literally

Slovenia is one of the few countries in the world where the right to drinking water is enshrined in the Constitution. Across towns and cities, you’ll find public fountains offering clean, cool and safe tap water, ideal for refilling your bottle as you explore.

Descend Into the Cool

Slovenia’s extensive cave system acts as nature’s own air conditioning – a perfect remedy for summer heatwaves. With over 13,000 registered caves, the country offers an astonishing variety of cool underground escapes. Among the most famous are the Postojna Cave and the UNESCO-listed Škocjan Caves, both renowned for their immense chambers and subterranean beauty. Lesser-known gems like Planina Cave and Križna Cave also offer unforgettable visits, each maintaining a steady year-round temperature of around 10°C – a welcome contrast to the hot air above.

But Slovenia’s caves and underground tunnels s are more than geological marvels – they’re sites of adventure. One standout experience is Peca Underground where visitors can cycle or kayak through the atmospheric tunnels of a former lead and zinc mine beneath Mt. Peca. It’s a unique opportunity to combine history, sport, and cool temperatures in one immersive adventure.
