Discover Metlika and Semič This Summer

Discover Metlika and Semič This Summer

This summer, step off the beaten path and into the tranquil charm of Bela krajina, where cultural heritage, pristine nature, and local hospitality come together in unforgettable ways. The historical towns of Metlika and Semič, two of the three historical towns that make up Bela krajina, invite visitors to slow down, taste and explore.

Metlika – Where Flavour Meets Tradition

In the heart of Metlika’s old town, the House of Local Delights (Hiša dobrot Bele krajine) presents the very best of local produce – from traditional flatbreads to handcrafted treats that reflect the region’s deep culinary roots. Here you can also take part in a unique experience: “Break your Bela krajina flatbread with friends”. This is not just a workshop, but a tribute to the symbolic gesture of sharing belokranjska pogača. Instead of cutting it, you break it – a warm welcome in every piece. The experience includes baking, wine tasting, and a guided stroll through the town’s heritage-rich streets.

Semič – A Hidden Gem Now on the Cultural Map

Featured for the first time in the All Aboard for Culture campaign, Semič offers a scenic blend of vineyard hills, lush forests and karst wonders. Towering above the town is Semiška gora, its slopes lined with vines, while down in the valley, cultural life flourishes at the Semič Cultural Centre, home to lively summer evenings of theatre, music and literature.

Start your visit at the Museum House Semič, where three permanent exhibitions offer insight into the region’s natural, historical and wine-making traditions. Just a short walk away is the anti-Turkish fortification surrounding the Church of St. Stephen, a reminder of the town’s resilient spirit.

Don’t miss the Krupa River Trail, a refreshing summer walk along the riverbed past old mill ruins, diverse flora and fauna and dramatic karst features – leading to the vibrant turquoise spring of the Krupa River, one of Slovenia’s most enchanting natural wonders. Here lies the only known habitat of the rare Congeria jalzici, a 50-million-year-old cave mussel you can admire up close in the local museum.

More about Semič

These two towns are also featured in the All Aboard for Culture campaign – a summer initiative that invites travellers to explore Slovenia’s historic towns by train and public transport. From 23 June to 31 August 2025, visitors can enjoy access to over 80 museums, galleries, and heritage sites across 20 towns simply by showing a valid train or bus ticket. It’s a call to travel green, travel slow – and discover more along the way.

Please note that temporary maintenance is taking place on regional rail connections until 6 August.
