A Visual Journey Through History: Cross Stories Connects Gorizia and Nova Gorica

The Cross Stories project offers a unique glimpse into the shared history of Gorizia and Nova Gorica, using eleven interactive information pillars that blend archival photography with modern urban views. Through this creative, cross-border initiative, visitors are invited to experience the cities’ transformation over time while deepening their understanding of the region’s rich cultural heritage.

Installed at carefully selected locations – nine in Gorizia and two in Nova Gorica – the pillars are equipped with optical viewfinders that align archival images with the exact viewpoint of today’s cityscape. This creates an engaging visual journey through history, showing how these border towns have evolved and how deeply intertwined their identities remain. The initiative was developed by the Lojze Bratuž Cultural Centre in Gorizia, which plans to expand the installation with more viewing points in the future.

The project also includes guided tours, multilingual brochures and interactive materials, making it accessible to all generations, including young visitors. Local guides are already leading visitors along the route, and the cultural centre is being developed into a dedicated tourist and educational hub.

As part of the European Capital of Culture 2025, Cross Stories stands out for its sustainable design and long-term impact. It is more than a visual installation – it is a platform for dialogue, memory and connection. In addition to the permanent displays, the project features a series of music and theatre performances that further explore the region’s past. By the end of the year, three productions will be staged: From Nice to Gorizia, Ljubka and a musical about Carlo Michelstädter.
