Green Mobility in Koroška: Two Bus Lines Now Connect Top Attractions

This summer, two special bus lines have started operating in the Koroška region, offering visitors a green and sustainable way to explore the area.

Now in its 7th season, the Štrekna Bus runs twice daily in July and August and on weekends in September. The route stretches from Lake Velenje in Slovenia to the bathing lake in Lavamünd in Austria. It follows the scenic Štrekna cycling route, which runs along the former Austro-Hungarian railway line, crossing viaducts and tunnels. Štrekna is considered one of the best-developed cycling routes in Slovenia and is the proud winner of the 2025 “Best EU Project” competition.

The 30-seat bus, equipped with a trailer for 16 bicycles, connects Velenje, Gornji Dolič, Mislinja, Slovenj Gradec, Otiški Vrh, Dravograd and Lavamünd in Austria. It makes several stops along the way, all carefully placed to offer safe bike loading and convenient starting points for visiting nearby attractions. Bike transport is free of charge

In early July 2025, a new addition joined the sustainable mobility offer: the Geopark Karavanke BUS, a cross-border bus line in the Karavanke UNESCO Global Geopark. Its goal is to promote sustainable tourism mobility by connecting Bleiburg Land train station with tourist attractions and local highlights on both sides of the border. The bus provides a comfortable and eco-friendly alternative to car travel across the geopark’s cross-border region.

The Geopark Karavanke BUS is a major step toward improving accessibility in the region and strengthening the link between transport and tourism in the cross-border area. Operating five times a day until the end of August, the line connects Austria and the Upper Meža Valley, giving passengers easy access to a variety of attractions in a single day – from the Olimpline zipline in Črna na Koroškem, the Mučevo via ferrata in Žerjav and the Peca Underground in Mežica, to the Austrian side of Mt. Peca, where a cable car takes visitors high into the Alps. Excellent railway connections now also provide quick access to nearby lakes and other tourist attractions.
