Radovljica: A Timeless Town with a Summer Full of Life

Steeped in tradition yet full of contemporary charm, the town invites visitors to stroll through cobbled streets, explore interactive museums and indulge in sweet local specialties. And this summer, Radovljica truly comes alive.

A sunlit scene in the heart of Radovljica’s old town, showcasing the elegant baroque façade of Radovljica Mansion.

Perched above the Sava River with sweeping views of the Julian Alps, Radovljica is a picture-perfect historic town in northwestern Slovenia, just a short drive from Bled. Known for its beautifully preserved medieval old town, strong beekeeping heritage and vibrant cultural scene, it is a place where history, craftsmanship and summer festivities come together.

A Stroll Through Time: Exploring the Old Town

At the heart of Radovljica lies Linhart Square, a jewel of medieval urban design. Here, beautifully restored houses with painted façades, a baroque fountain dedicated to philanthropist Josipina Hočevar and a warm community atmosphere create an inviting welcome. One of these striking buildings is the Šivec House Gallery, which showcases works by Slovenian visual artists and features an 18th-century black kitchen and granary. Just a few steps away, the Pharmacy and Alchemy Museum delights visitors with a fascinating global collection of alchemical artifacts and hands-on exhibits that engage all generations.

Another highlight is the Museum of Apiculture, located in Radovljica Castle. Its modern exhibition reveals the story of Slovenian beekeeping and the native Carniolan honey bee, while emphasizing the importance of pollinator conservation. The Municipal Museum introduces Anton Tomaž Linhart – Slovenia’s first dramatist and a native son of Radovljica – through a permanent exhibition that brings the Enlightenment period to life. At the Lectar Gingerbread Workshop, visitors can watch artisans craft traditional honeybread hearts, a cherished local symbol. Just around the corner stands St. Peter’s Church, one of the oldest in the region, surrounded by heritage sites that reflect Radovljica’s evolution through the centuries.

For families, the Family Beekeeping Orientation Game offers a playful way to explore the town and learn about its bee-loving heritage. And don’t leave without trying a treat from the local chocolate shop – or seeing Slovenia’s last remaining defensive moat, a fascinating reminder of Radovljica’s medieval past.

Summer in Radovljica: Markets, Music and Movies Under the Stars

From July through August, Radovljica transforms into a lively stage for some of the most delightful summer events, offering something for every taste. Open-Air Cinema brings Friday and Saturday evenings to life with screenings under the stars in scenic locations – ranging from Radovljica Park and Begunje to the banks of the Sava River and Lesce Airfield.

On Thursdays in July, Linhart Square pulses with creativity, as local artisans present a colourful array of handmade crafts, from unique jewelry to practical and decorative wares.

Then, on 3 August 2025, step back in time at the beloved Medieval Market – Venera’s Path, where traditional stalls, costumed vendors and live music evoke the spirit of Radovljica’s rich past.

The 43rd Radovljica Festival: An Ode to Early Music

From 9 to 26 August, Radovljica will host the 43rd Radovljica Festival, one of Europe’s most prestigious early music festivals. Known for historically informed performances and rare repertoire, the festival brings together international ensembles, soloists, and specialists in music from the Middle Ages to the early 19th century.
