Discover the Depths: Postojna Museum Gets a Bold New Look

Step into Slovenia’s underground wonders—Postojna’s regional museum is getting a fresh new look, complete with an interactive karst cave exhibition and modern digital upgrades.

On June 10, the Notranjska Museum Postojna (Notranjski muzej Postojna) unveiled a major renovation as part of the Kul(turizem) project, valued at €2.1 million and led by the Municipality of Postojna and the Znanje Postojna Public Institute. The upgrade includes a new interactive permanent exhibition on karst caves, improvements to the museum’s infrastructure, a shop and a wide range of new digital and gamified experiences. The exhibition will open this September in the museum’s basement.

The new display will present the karst underground from both natural and human perspectives, featuring the history of caves before human contact as well as their use as shelters, ice cellars, military hideouts and places of worship. Environmental themes will also be emphasized, including an art installation made from waste excavated from a karst sinkhole.

A newly built outdoor depot will showcase large objects for the first time, such as the first petrol-powered locomotive from Postojna Cave, a 17th-century mechanical spit and a dugout canoe. An adjacent lapidarium will feature fossils, sculptures, and other archaeological items.

Additional features include the launch of the Krasflix digital platform, the Krasolov gamified adventure, an upgraded cave animal room with digital microscopes, and a refreshed museum shop with new products. The museum will also introduce multilingual audio guides and content in sign language to ensure accessibility for all visitors.
