SAFETY FIRST: Strengthening Responsible Mountain Travel

SAFETY FIRST: Strengthening Responsible Mountain Travel

More and more travelers are discovering the magic of Slovenia’s mountains—but with rising numbers come growing risks. To help ensure that every alpine adventure is both safe and memorable, the Slovenian Tourist Board is stepping up with practical, easy-to-access guidance for a safer journey into the wild.

"Safely into the mountains" Landing Page for Responsible Mountain Visits

In partnership with Slovenia Outdoor, the Alpine Association of Slovenia, the Mountain Rescue Association of Slovenia, the Slovenian Environment Agency, the Slovenian Police, the Association of Mountain Guides of Slovenia, the Julian Alps Community, and Triglav National Park, the Slovenian Tourist Board is continuing the “Safe in the Mountains” campaign. In 2024, the trusted guide “Things You Should Know Before Heading Out to the Mountains” was revamped and relaunched on Slovenia.info under the Safely into the Mountains title, featuring an expanded selection of expert tips and planning resources for hiking in the Slovenian Alps.

The Safely into the Mountains page includes information on:

  • Geographical and climate characteristics of our mountains
  • Preparation for a hike, including checking the weather forecast and snow conditions
  • Choosing suitable routes and equipment based on individual fitness and experience
  • Booking mountain huts
  • Hiring a mountain guide
  • Using appropriate apps and digital tools (e.g., maPZS app, Slovenia Outdoor resources)
  • Responsible behaviour in nature.

Tourism professionals, especially those in direct contact with visitors, are encouraged to familiarize themselves with this content and share the link across their communication channels (websites, social media, etc.).

Posters and Stickers for Tourist Awareness at Destinations

In addition to the updated website, eye-catching promotional materials – including stickers and posters featuring a QR code linking directly to Safe Hiking in the Mountains – have been created. These visuals are displayed at key destinations and trailheads to raise awareness about safe and responsible mountain visits. Designed with a unified visual identity, the materials are available in both Slovenian and English via a convenient Dropbox link.

To request printed stickers and posters, please contact Slovenia Outdoor at: info@slovenia-outdoor.com

Social Media Communication

To strengthen our message of mountain safety, we’ve partnered with the Association of Mountain Guides of Slovenia to produce fresh awareness-raising content focused on responsible behavior in Slovenia’s highlands.

Triglav – Tips for a Safe and Responsible Ascent

As part of the Safe in the Mountains initiative, dedicated guidance was developed for ascending Triglav, Slovenia’s highest peak, which draws between 50,000 and 70,000 hikers each year. Despite its popularity, many visitors underestimate the physical demands and potential risks of the climb.

The content highlights:

  • Key planning considerations for a Triglav ascent
  • Geographical characteristics, route difficulty, required equipment and experience
  • Encouragement to hire a mountain guide for a safer experience
  • Recommended starting points, matched to the hiker’s experience level
  • Training suggestions before the hike, such as tackling easier peaks first and testing gear on secured climbing routes (via ferratas)
  • Advice on transportation and access to trailheads
  • Alternative viewpoints for less experienced hikers to admire Triglav from below
