New High-Speed Ferry Route to Connect Trieste and Piran This Summer

A new maritime connection between Trieste, Italy, and Piran, Slovenia, will be available for travelers from 26 June to 1 September 2025, offering a faster, more sustainable way to explore the Adriatic coast. Operated by Liberty Lines, the route marks a welcome return after a one-year break.

The new Trieste–Piran line is part of a broader maritime network connecting Trieste, Piran, Poreč, Rovinj and Mali Lošinj. The service uses a modern high-speed catamaran, the “Sofia M,” which can accommodate up to 180 passengers and offers bike transport, making it ideal for leisure travelers, cyclists, and cross-border tourists alike.

Fast, Comfortable, and Eco-Friendly Travel

The reintroduction of the ferry line is part of a growing push for sustainable tourism along the northern Adriatic. By reducing reliance on road transport, the route helps ease congestion on coastal roads during peak season while giving passengers a relaxed, scenic, and environmentally friendly travel alternative.

In addition to convenience, the ferry journey provides unmatched views of the Adriatic coastline, enhancing the overall travel experience and encouraging visitors to explore multiple destinations across Italy, Slovenia and Croatia in one trip.

Strengthening Cross-Border Tourism

This new connection also represents a step forward in regional tourism cooperation, supported by the Representative Office of the Slovenian Tourist Board in Italy, the Portorož-Piran Tourism Board, the Nova Gorica and Vipava Valley Tourism Board and Aurora Viaggi, a regional travel agency. The project creates opportunities for developing new cross-border tourism products, itineraries and partnerships that link the northern Adriatic region more closely than ever.
