EuroBasket Returns to Slovenia: Ljubljana's Stožice Arena to Host Group Stage in 2029

EuroBasket Returns to Slovenia: Ljubljana's Stožice Arena to Host Group Stage in 2029

Members of the FIBA Europe Executive Committee have selected the host countries for the 2029 European Men’s Basketball Championship. The tournament will take place in Estonia, Greece, Slovenia and Spain, with the final stage set to be held in Madrid, marking the 43rd edition of EuroBasket.

Slovenia, once again stepping into the spotlight of European basketball, will host part of the championship in Ljubljana – a decade and a half after the city welcomed the continent's best men's teams in 2013, and six years after the women’s EuroBasket took place in the same venue in 2023. In 2029, the Stožice Arena will once more become one of EuroBasket’s central venues. The other group stage matches will be held in Tallinn (Estonia), Athens (Greece) and Madrid (Spain), with the Spanish capital also hosting the final rounds of the tournament.

The Slovenian delegation in Riga was led by Aleš Križnar, Secretary General of the Basketball Federation of Slovenia (KZS), while Matej Erjavec, the Federation’s President, participated in the FIBA Europe Executive Committee meeting that decided on the host nations.

Erjavec expressed great enthusiasm about the upcoming tournament co-hosted by KZS and Slovenia: "This is a commitment and a job for the next four years. For Slovenia, this is the highest-level event our country can aspire to in terms of sports organization. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I expect a full Stožice Arena—everyone will come to see Dončić with a new generation of players. And since we’ll be able to choose a partner national team, it won’t only be Slovenia’s matches that sell out."

FIBA Europe President Jorge Garbajosa added: "We’re thrilled to bring EuroBasket 2029 to some of Europe’s top basketball destinations – each with a strong basketball culture and a clear commitment to delivering an exceptional event. We look forward to working closely with all the host countries to ensure a successful and unforgettable tournament for teams, fans, and partners alike."

Slovenia's bid presentation included a short video, portraying the country as a nation of champions – not only in sport but also in event organization.
