ECoC Events in May: Two Cities, One Heart

ECoC Events in May: Two Cities, One Heart

From 1 to 10 May, Nova Gorica and Gorizia are coming alive with the second major public event of the European Capital of Culture 2025 – the March for Europe. This vibrant ten-day celebration builds on the legacy of cross-border marches from the 20th century, symbolically uniting the twin towns and celebrating shared values of cooperation, peace and cultural diversity.

Now in its third consecutive year, the Friendship March championed the spirit of unity and transcending borders – both physical and ideological. Drawing inspiration from the legendary cross-border marches of the 1970s and 1980s, the event showcased how culture and community can transcend division. One of the highlights was the energetic evening concert featuring Austrian electronic duo Klangkarussell and an exciting lineup of musicians from both sides of the border.

Key highlights of the programme have so far included:

  • A poetic-dance performance by Leonie Humitsch and Maja Haderlap on 6 May in the evocative Ingeborg Bachmann Dome,
  • A captivating sound installation by the Dresden Symphony Orchestra in the tranquil setting of Rafutski Park on 7 May,
  • The Day of Borderless Festivals on 8 May at Europe Square, where culinary delights and vibrant showcases by local sports and cultural associations celebrated community spirit.

On 9 May – Europe Day – the emotionally charged documentary Ne pozabi me (Forget Me Not) by Slovenian director Anja Medved premieres, marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. The event series will conclude tomorrow, on 10 May with a spectacular robotic performance Inferno, featuring exoskeletons in motion by the innovative MN Dance Company.
