Slovenia's Forest Stories Featured in Google’s Global World Wide Wood Project

The Slovenian Tourist Board proudly joins a prestigious group of over 100 partners from 36 countries in a remarkable global multimedia initiative.

Google Arts & Culture’s latest global endeavour, the World Wide Wood project, celebrates the marvels and essential role of trees – those extraordinary organisms often referred to as the "engineers of nature".

This vibrant and engaging online platform is entirely devoted to the captivating stories of trees from around the world. It brings together contributions from more than 100 partners across 36 countries. Among them are two compelling stories that showcase the richness and wonders of Slovenia’s forests.

The interactive platform invites visitors on a fascinating journey through the world’s forests – uncovering rare tree species, fragile ecosystems, historical legacies and the (uncertain) future that lies ahead for global woodlands.

A standout feature is the Botanical Atlas, an interactive digital herbarium offering a deep dive into tree species native to each participating country. This initiative is a collaborative effort by Google Arts & Culture, the Botanical Research Institute of Texas, CRIA (Brazil) and the University Herbarium of the University of Cambridge. Together, they have digitalized nearly 450,000 plant specimens spanning more than 30,000 species, using artificial intelligence to expertly organize this expansive database.

Slovenia – the Land of Forests

Slovenia ranks among the most forest-rich countries in the world. Our forests are a national treasure – and we are proud to highlight them through multiple stories focused on forests and wood. Two of these are now featured in the World Wide Wood global collection:

•    Land of Forests
•    A Different Kind of Safari

Slovenian Stories on Google Arts & Culture

A quick look back: In 2021, the Slovenian Tourist Board embraced the invitation from Google Arts & Culture to participate in a pioneering digital project that showcases Slovenia’s natural charm, cultural landmarks and unique traditions. Slovenian Stories is an expansive and interactive online collection that brings to life the nation’s landscapes, heritage, myths and people. It includes more than 60 stories and virtual experiences, over 1,200 photographs, artworks and frescoes and culminates in enchanting fairy tales from Slovenian folklore. Four well-known fairy tales – adapted from the work of folklorist Dušica Kunaver – are featured.

The project earned the prestigious Diamond Award at the 2022 Golden City Gate International Awards, recognizing its exceptional contribution to global digital storytelling.
