Second Major Highlight of GO! 2025: The March for Europe in May

The second of four major public events of the European Capital of Culture 2025, Nova Gorica–Gorizia, will unfold between 1 and 10 May, transforming the cross-border area around Europe Square into a vibrant celebration of culture, sport and shared heritage.

Running across ten days, The March for Europe will spotlight the unique unity of Nova Gorica and Gorizia, transcending borders through a dynamic programme of cultural, artistic, musical, and sports activities. This cross-border spectacle underscores the spirit of cooperation and European values that lie at the heart of the ECoC 2025 initiative.

“It’s significant that the March for Europe blends culture with sport,” said Mija Lorbek, Director of the GO! 2025 Public Institute. “This time, the event not only bridges Slovenia and Italy but expands the concept of borderlessness to the broader Alps-Adriatic region, thanks to the twinning of Nova Gorica, Gorizia and Klagenfurt. On May , international delegations will take part in the Borderless Friendship March, followed by artistic events in the Ingeborg Bachmann Dome and a musical celebration featuring sounds from all three nations. Together with Chemnitz, our twin ECoC 2025 city, we’re crafting an inspiring, cross-cultural conclusion on May 10.”

The festivities will kick off at 8 a.m. on Thursday, May 1, with the expanded Borderless March of Friendship, including all-day sports activities and the Borderless Entertainment music programme. That same day, the BridA Institute’s intermedia installation Prehajanja / Crossings will open on Bevk Square. The evening will crescendo with a showcase of electronic music from across the Alps-Adriatic region, headlined by the Austrian duo Klangkarussell, who recently released their new single Afterglow.

Throughout the week, the borderless zone around Europe Square will come alive with diverse events that creatively blend culture, sport and music. Highlights include Borderless Basketball, Borderless Football / Calcetto, Borderless Street, creative children’s activities (Children’s Easy), Green Points and Movement, literary and dance performances in the Ingeborg Bachmann Dome, the evocative opening of The Tree Orchestra in Rafut Park, Festival of Crafts and Entrepreneurship, Tastes Without Borders, the Rose Festival, the Festival of Amateur Culture and the announcement of the Entrepreneurial Wine 2025 winners. Europe Day on May 9 will see the premiere of Don’t Forget Me by filmmaker Anja Medved, followed by a spectacular finale with Inferno, a fusion of dance and robotics by MN Dance Company. “These robotic exoskeletons were originally designed to support individuals with disabilities,” explained Lucija Sila, Assistant Director at GO! 2025. “Visitors will even have the chance to try them and feel what it’s like when your movements are guided by a machine.”

As a continuation of the cross-cultural programming, the region will host the dramatic finish of the 14th stage of the Giro d’Italia on May 24, right near Europe Square, embedded within a vibrant weekend of sports and cultural festivities from May 23–25. A new weekend hop-on-hop-off bus service connecting Goriška’s key attractions will also launch, making exploration more accessible for visitors from May through September 30.

This landmark event is part of Stop the City!, a key programme of GO! 2025 designed to unlock the cultural and tourism potential of the region, alongside the GO! 2025 Small Project Fund, supported by Interreg Italia–Slovenia and managed by EGTC GO.

The European Capital of Culture GO! 2025, a flagship initiative of the European Union, carries a bold mission: to transcend borders—both physical and mental. Under the inspiring slogan "GO Borderless," the project unites Nova Gorica and Gorizia, two cities with distinct historical and cultural identities, fostering cooperation, shared governance and a truly cross-border way of life. Through a thoughtfully curated programme of cultural and artistic events, GO! 2025 aspires to deliver excellence, spark dialogue, and offer experiences that go beyond the ordinary. The journey began with the spectacular opening ceremony From Station to Station on 8 February. It continues with vibrant milestones such as the cross-cultural culinary festival Tastes Without Borders (26–28 September) and the immersive Illuminated Closing Ceremony (1–5 December).
