ECoC 2025 April Events

April welcomes a vibrant mix of cultural offerings under the European Capital of Culture (ECoC) 2025, spanning film, dance, graphic art, sustainability, history and acoustics.

From celebrating ancient customs to discovering the fascinating world of furry creatures like bats, this month promises an exciting array of events leading up to the eagerly anticipated Stop the City! festival, set to bring the city's energy to new heights, just like the grand opening of ECoC.

Key Events:

  • Invisible Women Project (April 2–4): A series of lectures, exhibitions, and workshops that place women at the forefront. Esteemed directors Urška Djukić and Nadja Velušček, a recipient of the Štiglic Prize, will participate in this compelling exploration of women’s voices in film and art.
  • Film Premiere and Exhibition Openings: On April 3, Once Upon a Time in the Soča Valley (Nekoč v Posočju), a film by Ema Kugler, will premiere in Gorizia, offering a window into the Old Believers’ folk tradition. This coincides with the opening of Secret Wisdom (Skrivna modrost), an exhibition at Vogrsko Castle, showcasing a permanent ethnological collection starting April 23rd.
  • Cultural Installations and Sculptures: Spring heralds the start of art installations on both sides of the border. On April 10, Impulse for the Soča, a sculpture by Boštjan Kavčič, will be unveiled in Kanal ob Soči.
  • East/West Film Retrospective (April 10–25): This cinematic series delves into the complex history and cultural dynamics of the border area between Slovenia and Italy, offering a thought-provoking look at the region's heritage.
  • Zoran Mušič Oil Paintings (April 12): The renowned painter and graphic artist Zoran Mušič's collection will be showcased at Štanjel Castle.
  • Aerowaves Spring Forward Festival (April 23–26): This dynamic dance festival will showcase some of the best contemporary European dance artists.
  • Sound Sculpture and Acoustic Wonders: On April 24, Rihemberk Castle will host a sound sculpture that invites visitors to experience the acoustic world of bats, blending art with nature’s wonders.
  • Ingeborg Bachmann Dome Opening (April 25): Near Europe Square, the opening of the Ingeborg Bachmann Dome marks another milestone in the cultural transformation of the city.

Looking ahead, Stop the City! will return on May 1 with the March for Europe, setting the stage for nine days of engaging cultural activities.
