Open House Slovenia Returns for Its 16th Edition

Open House Slovenia Returns for Its 16th Edition

From 11 to 13 April, the Open House Slovenia (OHS) Architecture Festival returns for its sixteenth edition, inviting the public to step inside more than 70 architectural gems across the country –completely free of charge and guided by experts in the field.

Under the honorary patronage of the President of the Republic of Slovenia, Dr. Nataša Pirc Musar, the Open House Slovenia (OHS) Architecture Festival opens up private homes, institutions and otherwise inaccessible buildings, offering a rare firsthand experience of quality design.

At the heart of this annual celebration of architecture is a commitment to the responsible management of space. By encouraging direct engagement with architecture, the festival promotes broader awareness of its cultural, social and environmental value. Visitors are not only given access to architectural excellence but are invited to join a dialogue on how our built environment shapes everyday life – and our collective future.

Future Heritage: A Theme with Vision

This year’s theme, Future Heritage, challenges us to rethink what we consider heritage in the context of contemporary architecture. It examines how today's spaces respond to tradition, local identity and the evolving demands of the present. Through guided tours and thematic discussions, the festival explores questions like: Which practices of today will become the heritage of tomorrow? And how can we balance innovation with continuity?

Among the featured highlights are visits to:

  • The renovated Auersperg Ironworks in Dvor pri Žužemberku, home to a Natura 2000 Interpretation and Information Centre.
  • KO-RA Senior Citizens' Centre in Ravne na Koroškem.
  • Alpine houses and the Vintgar Gorge Entrance Building in Gorenjska.
  • The Rotovž Centre construction site in Maribor.
  • Ankaran Cemetery, presented through a guided tour.
  • In Celje, the Pelikan Photo Gallery and Castle Paths, both explored with architects’ insights.

In celebration of the 160th anniversary of famed Slovenian architect Maks Fabiani, the 2025 festival will include special guided tours of his most significant works. In Ljubljana, participants can join a walk through Fabiani’s Ljubljana, including a visit to the Mladika building. In Štanjel, the tour extends to the Ferrari Garden, offering a glimpse into his design legacy.

This year, the festival goes beyond the main weekend. A series of thematic events will continue to unfold throughout 2025. The first of these – Spaces of the State –will run from 16 to 18 May. In June, attention turns to the centenary of architect Milan Mihelič, with a guided visit to the Slovenijales building, one of his modernist masterpieces.

Connected Across Europe

Since February 2023, Open House Slovenia has been part of Open House Europe, a network of 15 European cities working to foster a more inclusive conversation about architecture and urban life. This partnership amplifies Slovenia’s voice in the shared European story of space, design, and the values they carry.
