Maribor Recognized as a World Tree City

Maribor proudly earned the prestigious title of Tree City of the World, becoming one of only 210 cities globally recognized for their dedicated care and management of urban trees.

The recognition, awarded by the Arbor Day Foundation and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, highlights the city's commitment to sustainable development and responsible green space management.

With around 13,000 trees in public spaces, Maribor is rich in tree heritage. Some, like the oak tree near the Puppet Theatre, are over 160 years old. Maribor is home to remarkable specimens, including the northernmost almond tree, an 814-centimetre plane tree near Betnava Castle, towering redwoods, and a rare Caucasian winged nut tree. These trees, along with many others, are a testament to Maribor’s deep connection to nature and its role in the city’s vibrant cultural and environmental landscape.

The prestigious recognition as a Tree City of the World, alongside Maribor's selection as the Green Capital of Europe for 2025, showcases the city's dedication to both environmental preservation and sustainable development.
