Maribor Begins 2025 as European Best Green Capital

Maribor Begins 2025 as European Best Green Capital

In 2025, Maribor will proudly hold the title of the Best Green Capital for 2025, awarded by the EBD platform. This recognition places Maribor ahead of Copenhagen (Denmark) and Riga (Latvia), which ranked second and third, respectively. These cities were evaluated for their natural features, green spaces, well-being, and vibrant cultural scene.

The Maribor Tourist Board entered 2025 with a prestigious accolade for Maribor, which will hold the title of "Best European Green Capital in Europe" for 2025. This recognition places Maribor ahead of Copenhagen (Denmark) and Riga (Latvia), which ranked second and third, respectively.

Through an international promotional campaign in partnership with the European Best Destinations (EBD) global platform, Maribor aims to attract environmentally conscious tourists and guests seeking high-value experiences

In December 2024, Maribor recorded approximately 38,000 overnight stays, reflecting a 6% increase compared to December 2023. Additionally, there were around 15,500 tourist arrivals, marking a 7.5% increase. However, for the entire year of 2024, the city saw approximately 524,000 overnight stays, representing a 4% decrease, while tourist arrivals grew by 6%, reaching around 254,000.

Maribor has been consistently recognized for its excellence in recent years. In 2023 and 2024, it earned multiple EBD titles, including:

  • Third Best Tourist Destination in Europe
  • Best Culinary Destination in Europe
  • Best European Autumn Destination
  • Second Most Sustainable Christmas Fair

Jure Struc, Director of the Maribor Tourist Board, emphasized the importance of these accolades:  "By consistently appearing on the world's most prestigious tourism lists, we proudly position Maribor and Slovenia among Europe’s top destinations. The titles we have earned through the EBD platform over the past two years allow us to share the unique stories of our city with a broader European and global audience, reinforcing Maribor’s reputation as a premier destination for new generations seeking diverse experiences, authenticity and urban charm. The close proximity of Pohorje and the wine-growing region, our high-quality local gastronomy, pristine tap water, the characteristic hospitality of the locals, an increasing number of pedestrian-friendly zones in the revitalized city centre, an efficient bike rental system, the absence of mass tourism and a high level of safety—these are just some of the green and sustainable attributes that define Maribor. They are integral to our daily lives and serve as compelling motivations for visitors when planning their vacations.”
