Lahinja Trail: Slovenia’s First Three-Star Zero Waste Event Sets New Standards

The Lahinja Trail has solidified its reputation as the premier outdoor event in Bela Krajina while achieving a groundbreaking milestone as Slovenia's first event to earn the prestigious three-star zero waste certificate.

The inaugural Lahinja Trail in 2023 saw 30 runners participating in a pilot run through the pristine Lahinja Landscape Park. Co-organized by RIC Bela krajina, Lahinja Landscape Park and Ecologists Without Borders, this zero waste event achieved an impressive 98.55% waste separation rate, earning it a two-star Zero Waste certificate. Encouraged by this success, the organisers expanded their efforts in 2024, adopting a strategic approach to boost participation and deepen the commitment to sustainable practices.

A Growing Community with Reduced Impact

The 2024 Lahinja Trail attracted approximately 300 participants, including runners, organisers and volunteers, who generated a total of only 18.5 kilograms of waste—averaging just over 60 grams per person. Key sustainable practices included:

  • Personal Hydration: Runners refilled their own bidons with water or isotonic drinks at four eco-friendly refreshment stations.
  • Local and Sustainable Snacks: Fresh apples sourced from the local Škof Fruit Farm provided a natural energy boost.
  • Reusable Dining Options: Post-run meals, including both meat and vegetarian options, were served on reusable plates with durable cutlery, while drinks were provided in returnable bottles.
  • Effective Waste Management: The Green Guard team ensured proper waste management, achieving exceptional environmental results.

Looking Ahead: Lahinja Trail 2025

The organisers have announced that the next Lahinja Trail will take place on 8 November 2025, featuring routes through the ecologically sensitive Lahinja Landscape Park. To ensure nature conservation, the number of participants will be limited, maintaining the event’s harmony with its pristine surroundings.
