Baška Grapa Joins Mountaineering Villages Network

In 2024, Baška Grapa was officially recognized as part of the international Mountaineering Villages Network, highlighting its commitment to sustainable tourism and cultural heritage. The region has undertaken several initiatives, including the development of a website and promotional materials, to integrate into the network and promote its unique mountain life.

Baška Grapa has been officially awarded the title of "Bergsteigerdörfer" following its successful candidacy for inclusion in the prestigious international network of Mountaineering Villages. The presentation took place at the Austrian Mountaineering Association’s headquarters in Innsbruck, with the Austrian Alpine Association (ÖAV) spearheading the project alongside member associations from South Tyrol (AVS), Germany (DAV), Italy (CAI), Switzerland (SAC) and Slovenia (PZS).

The Mountaineering Villages Network, now including Baška Grapa, emphasizes sustainable development in alignment with the goals of the Alpine Convention. Key focus areas include nature-based tourism, hiking, minimal tourist infrastructure, mountain farming and local forestry, as well as the protection of nature and cultural landscapes. The initiative also promotes sustainable mobility and preserves the authentic lifestyles of mountain communities.

In 2024, the Baška Grapa Gorniška Vas project working group undertook numerous activities to integrate the area into the network. These initiatives included preparing application documentation, launching the Baskagrapa.si website and social media profiles, creating content for a brochure to be published in multiple languages in 2025 and developing souvenirs. Additionally, an evaluation of the 2014 Baška Grapa Sustainable Development Strategy is currently underway.

By joining the Mountaineering Villages Network, Baška Grapa is firmly positioning itself as a destination that preserves its natural and cultural heritage while prioritizing sustainable development.
