Ribnica: A Timeless Blend of Craftsmanship, Culture and Festive Cheer

Ribnica is a historical town renowned for its rich heritage of handicrafts. The centuries-old traditions of craftsmanship are celebrated here, inviting reflection on sustainable living. Ribnica’s charm is also reflected in its old town and Ribnica Square, one of the oldest squares in the former region of Carniola, as well as the historic Ribnica Castle, which played a central role in shaping the valley’s structure.

Discover the Rich Heritage and Creative Spirit of Ribnica

The Ribnica Handicraft Centre is a key attraction, showcasing the town's deep connection to its handicraft history while inspiring new creativity. Here, visitors can explore the long-standing tradition of dry-goods production through workshops, exhibitions, and a well-stocked museum shop. The Škrabec Homestead in Hrovača honours Friar Stanislav Škrabec, a pioneering linguist and the founder of modern Slovenian orthography.

The Ribnica Castle, built in 1263, stands proudly by the Bistrica River, offering visitors a glimpse into the region’s medieval past. The parish church of St. Stephen, home to the iconic work of architect Jože Plečnik, is a must-see, with its twin bell towers and art by notable Slovenian artists. Lastly, the Miklova hiša Gallery offers a vibrant space for contemporary art, housed in a historical building dating back to 1870.

Advent in Ribnica: A Celebration of Joy, Culture, and Creativity

Ribnica comes alive with festive cheer throughout the Advent season, transforming the town into a vibrant hub of cultural events for all ages. The lighting of the Advent lights on November 30 marked the beginning of a season filled with concerts, theatre performances, cultural events  and children's workshops. Ribnica Castle fills the air with the aromas of mulled wine, gingerbread, and other festive delicacies, while visitors enjoy unique Christmas stalls and a memorable New Year's Eve celebration at the castle.
