The recognition process, supported by the European Parliament, is steered by the Christmas Cities Network to highlight locations that exemplify cultural heritage, creativity and community values during the festive season. An international jury, chaired by Professor Danuta Hübner, brings unparalleled expertise, reinforcing the initiative’s commitment to European excellence.

Celje has been crowned the European Christmas City 2025, a title that celebrates its 25-year tradition of Fairytale Celje. This Slovenian city enchants visitors each December with captivating performances, artisanal markets and medieval-themed festivities at the historic Celje Castle. The city’s unique blend of light installations and sustainable initiatives highlights its commitment to preserving heritage while embracing modern values, making it a true festive haven.

“We are deeply honored that the Fairytale Celje program has captivated the expert jury and showcased our efforts to enhance Celje’s unique identity,” said Maja Voglar, Director of Celeia Celje, which develops and implements the annual Fairytale Celje programme. “This recognition highlights our commitment to fostering authentic connections with local heritage, strengthening intergenerational and intersectoral cooperation and creating an urban experience that blends culture, art and gastronomy to deliver meaningful value to our community.”

The Mayor of Celje, Matija Kovač, expressed pride and excitement about the recognition: "The title of European Christmas City 2025 is more than an honour for Celje – it is an opportunity to craft a new, extraordinary chapter in our city’s festive legacy. This achievement inspires us to lay fresh foundations, guided by a vision that integrates modern trends, sustainable practices and a deep respect for our rich cultural heritage. In the coming year, we aim to push beyond conventional boundaries, designing a holiday experience that is not only unique but also profoundly engaging for both our residents and visitors. By fostering cooperation and embracing innovative ideas, we believe we can create a festive season that elevates Celje as a shining example of Christmas magic."

Joining Celje in this celebration of Christmas magic, Vilnius, Lithuania, has been named the European Christmas Capital 2025 and Noja, Spain, took the title of European Christmas Village 2025.

The official ceremony to bestow these prestigious titles will take place in Brno, Czech Republic, on December 15, 2024.
