A Safe and Colourful Autumn Visit to the Mountains

Autumn brings a heightened likelihood of fog and the possibility of sudden weather changes, including snow. However, the vibrant colours of fall are a breathtaking invitation to immerse yourself in the beauty of the outdoors in a safe, respectful and responsible manner.

A Safe and Colourful Autumn Visit to the Mountains

As October brings cooler temperatures, the mountain huts at higher elevations begin to close for the season, while those at lower altitudes shift to autumn and winter operating hours. However, during the first week of November, mountain huts in the middle and lower elevations remain open to visitors. The Slovenian Mountaineering Association advises making reservations in advance, especially if you're planning to stay overnight or visit with a large group. This ensures that staff can prepare by heating rooms and providing adequate food supplies.

If you’re heading into the mountains with elderly family members, it’s crucial to ensure that the trip is not too demanding. Given that help in remote areas can be several hours away, choose trails that are accessible by car and have nearby mountain huts or urban settings. Keep in mind that helicopter assistance is not always feasible.

As the days grow shorter, aim to arrive at your destination early and don’t forget to carry a headlamp. Your first-aid kit, a trusty companion on every hike, should be well-stocked with three triangular bandages for treating common injuries, along with two over-the-counter allergy tablets easily found at pharmacies.

Before heading out, always check whether the mountain hut is open, and use the maPZS web app to check for trail warnings, including closures due to fallen trees. If you encounter an impassable path or hazards on your hike, report them through the app; proactive communication is vital for everyone's safety.

The mountain will always be there for you to explore, so heed the guidelines and recommendations to ensure a safe experience.
