Brda Home of Rebula Event Welcomes Global Wine Writers and Critics

This week, the picturesque region of Brda hosted an exclusive gathering of wine writers and critics from around the globe for the Brda: Home of Rebula event, dedicated to exploring the potential of the increasingly popular Rebula wine variety. This year’s event spotlighted the impact of extreme weather conditions caused by climate change on this unique grape. Eleven winemakers from both sides of the Slovenian-Italian border came together for the seventh edition of this prestigious event, which has attracted esteemed names from the international wine press.

Launched in 2017, the Brda: Home of Rebula project unites winemakers from Slovenia and Italy's Collio region, all of whom have made significant strides in international markets with their Rebula wines. Recognizing the importance of sharing their belief in the potential of this native variety, the Brda Consortium has so far hosted 175 journalists and wine critics from various European countries, the USA and China. These participants have published numerous articles in leading wine publications, including Decanter (UK), Jancis Robinson (UK), Wine Spectator (USA), Vinous (USA), Gambero Rosso (Italy), Falstaff (Italy) and many others across Belgium, Croatia, Poland, China, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Austria and Germany.

Masterclass Highlights

The centerpiece of the event, the Masterclass, took place on September 25 at Villa Vipolže. Eight Slovenian winemakers—Dolfo, Domaine Vicomte de Noüe-Marinic, Edi Simčič, Erzetič, Ferdinand, Klet Brda, Marjan Simčič, Domaine Medot and Ščurek—alongside two Italian producers, Gradis’cutta and Jermann, presented their Rebula wines for an in-depth analysis.

2024 Theme: Rebula and Extreme Weather Conditions

2022 marked one of the driest periods in recent decades, while 2023 set a record as the wettest year in 30 years. The Masterclass examined how Rebula responded to these contrasting conditions, offering insights into the characteristics of wines produced under such extremes.

Experiencing Brda and Slovenia

Journalists and sommeliers from Italy, Germany, Austria, Belgium, the UK, Croatia, Serbia and Slovenia visited Brda and the wineries of the participating winemakers. Recognizing that wine is an integral part of the region’s culture and tradition, which is best expressed through its gastronomy, guests also tasted local culinary delights.

The Brda: Home of Rebula event stands as the only gathering of its kind in Slovenia, having gained international recognition as one of the region's most prominent wine events. It is organized by the Brda Consortium, featuring eleven distinguished Brda wineries, in collaboration with the Municipality of Brda, the Brda Tourism, Culture, Youth, and Sports Institute and the Slovenian Tourist Board.
