National and University Library Marks 250th Anniversary

"The library is not just important to us, but to everyone and all professions equally. All classes would turn to the library for inspiration, their salvation. It is something created for all times." – Jože Plečnik, 1933.

2024 commemorates the 250th anniversary of the National and University Library (NUK). Yesterday, on May 28th, a gala academy was held in the NUK's Great Reading Room as part of the celebrations. Among the speakers was also Dr. Nataša Pirc Musar, the President of the Republic of Slovenia, who presented the NUK with the Order of Extraordinary Merit. In her address, she reflected on the beginnings of the NUK, emphasizing that "there are few institutions that can boast that their age is measured in centuries." 

To commemorate the anniversary, the NUK organized the "Keeping Thoughts - 250 Years" exhibition, showcasing materials, thoughts and images that depict the significance of collecting, preserving, conserving, sharing and caring for various books. The exhibition includes original treasures from their collection, including the Stična Manuscript, one of the most important Slovenian medieval texts.
