Slovenia Celebrates 20 Years in the EU

Slovenia celebrates 20 years of EU membership on May 1, 2024, with national festivities on May 9 in Nova Gorica marking the occasion. The event coincides with Europe Day, highlighting the city's symbolic significance as the future European Capital of Culture in 2025.

Slovenia Celebrates 20 Years in the EU

On May 1, 2004, Slovenia joined the European Union, marking a significant milestone in its history. The celebration was a grand affair, not just in Slovenia but across Europe. Nova Gorica, in particular, stood out as a symbol of integration and unity, hosting a historic meeting between then-President of the European Commission, Romano Prodi, and Slovenian Prime Minister Dr. Anton Rop.

Now, as we approach the 20th anniversary of Slovenia's EU membership on May 9, also known as Europe Day, Nova Gorica is poised to commemorate this occasion in grand style once again. As the future European Capital of Culture (ECOC) in 2025, alongside Gorizia in Italy, Nova Gorica's central celebration holds additional symbolic significance.

The national festivities on May 9 will unfold around Europe Square, the very spot where Prodi and Rop marked Slovenia's accession to the EU two decades ago. This event remains a pivotal moment in the lives of Slovenian citizens and Europeans alike. Europe Day also marks the signing of the Schuman Declaration, symbolizing the beginnings of European integration.

Alongside the anniversary celebration, Nova Gorica will offer a glimpse into its ECOC 2025 programme. Artists will open their studios, ateliers and stages to the public, showcasing projects already underway for the ECOC. The official opening ceremony of the European Capital of Culture, strengthening the bond between Nova Gorica and Gorizia, is set for February 8, 2025.
