Exploring Slovenia's verdant treasures: celebrating International Day of Forests

Today, we celebrate the International Day of Forests, recognizing the critical importance of forests and trees in sustaining life on Earth. In Slovenia, lush forests cover more than half of the country (58%). Such a high percentage makes Slovenia the third most forested country within the European Union, right after Finland and Sweden. Slovenia's diverse forests, ranging from beech and oak to fir and spruce, not only provide a haven for wildlife but also play a crucial role in mitigating climate change and preserving biodiversity.

As part of the global commemoration, communities throughout Slovenia are coming together to organize various events aimed at raising awareness about the importance of forests. These activities include tree-planting events, educational seminars, and nature walks. From the majestic forests of the Julian Alps, the tranquil woodlands of the Pohorje Mountains to the esteemed Krokar virgin forest and the Snežnik-Ždrocle forest reserve, which have even earned a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List, Slovenia's diverse landscapes serve as a testament to the significance of forest preservation.
