Stay safe in the mountains: essential prevention tips & first aid knowledge

Slovenian mountaineering association's press conference on 7 July was held to advocate mountain safety. Let us guide you through the vital tips, which are nicely summed up in the latest Feel Slovenia podcast.

Stay safe in the mountains: essential prevention tips & first aid knowledge

Klara Kavčič, a representative of the youth commission within the Slovenian Mountaineering Association, along with Matjaž Šerkezi, an assistant of the association and instructor for the Slovenian Mountain Rescue Association, emphasized the concerning trend of the fast-paced and chaotic lifestyle from the valleys reaching the mountains, which have no or little room for errors or recklessness.

Reiterating vital tips:

Planning: Before embarking on a mountain journey, thoroughly research your route, considering its difficulty and length. Always check weather forecasts and route conditions. Utilize a printed mountain map and the maPZS app for effective planning.

Equipment: Essential gear includes hiking boots, warm clothing, non-alcoholic liquids, a map and compass, first aid supplies, a head torch, and sun protection.

Physical and mental preparation: Hiking and mountaneering are physically demanding. Ensure you are in good physical condition. Begin with easier, lower-altitude hikes, gradually progressing to more challenging ones.

Respect nature: Mountains are home to diverse wildlife and plants, thriving in challenging conditions. Respect the environment by bringing your trash back to the valley. Avoid loud music or shouting in mountainous areas.

Be cautious: Stay vigilant for falling rocks, particularly on steep slopes. Be aware of potential hazards like thunderstorms and avoid overexertion.

Keep others informed: Inform a trusted person of your itinerary and expected return time. This way, if any unexpected circumstances arise, they will be aware of your situation and know where to find you.

Stay on marked trails: Follow marked trails to minimize unnecessary risks. Slovenia boasts 10,000 kilometers of well-marked and maintained mountain trails, eliminating the need for off-road exploration. Certain destinations, like specific bivouacs, are reserved for experienced mountaineers. Remember that bivouacs are not intended for casual tourists but serve as emergency shelters for experienced climbers.

Highlights of this year's mountaineering season:

Ample snowfall: The mountains got substantial snowfall, expected to persist well into the summer. Be prepared to encounter sections of mountain paths covered in thick, frozen snow. Cross only if the terrain is flat and secure, with no risk of slipping. For slopes, ensure you have an ice axe and snowshoes. The Slovenian Mountaineering Association (PZS) recommends using a mountaineering or alpine helmet for added safety.

Double-check the information: Obtain reliable and objective information about your chosen mountain trip or tour. Verified online portals like the Slovenian Mountaineering Association website and printed mountaineering guides are excellent sources. While social networks and personal experiences can provide additional insights, remember that they often reflect subjective assessments. What may be easy or safe for one person may not be the same for others. Matjaž Šerkezi advises seeking professional guidance from a qualified mountain guide if you lack experience or seek more challenging routes. Verify their competence and qualifications beforehand.

Prioritize first aid: Accidents can occur in mountainous terrain, so it is crucial to be well-prepared and possess basic first aid knowledge. Understanding the fundamentals of first aid can be lifesaving during emergencies.
