Celebrate International Museum Day by planning your cultural break in Slovenia
Tomorrow, we are celebrating International Museum Day. Slovenia boasts a number of exciting museums, which are definitely worth visiting.

For over 40 years, International Museum Day is celebrated on 18 May. As stated on their website, "this is a unique opportunity to raise awareness that museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples".
This year's theme is "Museums, Sustainability and Wellbeing", which emphasizes the fact that museums are key contributors to the wellbeing and to the sustainable development of our communities.
Slovenian museums and galleries house numerous valuable items that testify that the area of today's Slovenia has been significantly involved in international developments for a really long time. There are numerous museums dotted all over the country which makes it perfect for culture-oriented holidays.
We invite you to explore numerous exciting museums and delve into rich cultural heritage of Slovenia. Did you know that the National Museum of Slovenia is home to the 60,000-year old flute of a Neanderthal, which is considered to be the oldest musical instrument in the world? Or that Celje Regional Museum houses the oldest artefact found in Europe - the 30,000-year-old sewing needle from Potočka Zijalka? Not to mention that the oldest wooden wheel in the world was found on the territory of Slovenia (in the Ljubljana Marshes) - today, you will find it in the City Museum of Ljubljana.
Since there are really many museums dotted all around Slovenia, we made a selection of the most exciting (unusual) museums in each of the regions. From the Škrilj Bunker in the Central Slovenia, which was constructed during the Cold War Era, Old Vine House in Maribor (Alpine region), which provides a comprehensive insight into the history of the world's oldest vine, The Secret Rooms of Jama Hotel or the Saltworks Museum in the Karst-Mediterranean Slovenia, to Eco-Museum of Hop-Growing and Brewing Industry in Žalec and Expano exhibiton pavilion in Pomurje. Browse through the most exciting museums in each region and choose your favourite(-s).
