Vilenica Cave celebrates 390 years of tourism and 60 years of the reopening to tourists
Between 5 and 28 May 2023, the Karst and Brkini region will celebrate 390 years of tourism in Vilenica and the 60th anniversary of the cave's reopening to tourists.

Vilenica is considered to be the oldest tourist cave in Europe, perhaps even in the world. The first visitors who paid a fee to visit, visited the cave as early as 1633, and the oldest surviving registration book dates from 1821. The Sežana Caving Society is one of more than 40 caving societies in Slovenia and has left a significant mark on the wider area of its activities since its foundation in 1955, in particular thanks to its caving discoveries and the management of the oldest tourist cave. Vilenica Cave is one of the richest caves in terms of stalactites and is therefore one of the most important geopoints in the emerging cross-border Karst-Carso Geopark. It again reopened for tourists 60 years ago, on 19 May 1963.
On the occasion of these remarkable anniversaries, a number of events will take place in Vilenica. The festival will culminate on Saturday, 20 May, with a full day of events in front of the cave, free cave tours, a guided hike along the Ludvik's Learning Trail, a mountain-bike tour of important geopoints in the wider Vilenica area, and a cross-border cycle ride Trieste-Bazovica-Vilenica Cave.
