The final countdown to Planica 2023, the Nordic spectacle

The FIS Nordic World Ski Championships Planica 2023, the biggest sporting event in Slovenia's history, will kick off on Tuesday with the opening ceremony in Kranjska Gora. Until 5 March 2023, Slovenia will be in the global spotlight. Watch the world-class international sporting spectacle live!

The final countdown to Planica 2023, the Nordic spectacle

The FIS Nordic World Ski Championships Planica 2023, which will start with an opening ceremony on 21 February 2023 at 20:23, will conclude on 5 March with the men's 50 km cross-country skiing. During this time, 24 competitions will take place in three disciplines: 12 in cross-country skiing, 7 in ski jumping and 5 in Nordic combined.

All competitions will be held at the state-of-the-art venue in Planica, which has world-class facilities, ski jumping hills and cross-country skiing tracks.

The Championships will consist of 11 days of competition, while Monday 27 February will be a day off. Fans will be able to enjoy a rich music accompanying programme and numerous other exciting events at various venues.

Get to Planica by free public transport

From 10 February, afternoon tickets are on sale at Petrol outlets for a single price of €33 for all fans, valid from 15:00 every day. Family day tickets are also available at a special price and are valid for up to 4 people, where at least one person must be an adult (over 18 years) and at least one person must be a child (under 14 years). Family day ticket prices vary by day.

All visitors will have the possibility to use free return train transport from anywhere in Slovenia to Jesenice from 22 to 26 February and from 28 February to 5 March. A free shuttle bus service will be available from Jesenice railway station to Ledine (Rateče) and back. Planica is closed to private vehicles.

The Championships are expected to reach more than half a billion people

The FIS Nordic World Ski Championships will highlight Planica, Kranjska Gora and Slovenia to more than 500 million TV viewers worldwide. It will be broadcast by TV stations from the key tourism markets of Slovenia: Germany (ARD, ZDF), Italy (RAI Sport +), Austria (ORF 1, ORF Sport +), Czech Republic, Russia, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Poland, Switzerland, Denmark, Slovakia, France, UK, Croatia, USA, China and several others (the races will also be broadcast as part of the Eurosport global TV network).

The event has major economic implications. Approximately 1,500 competitors with accompanying teams from 60 countries, approximately 2,000 representatives of the foreign media and approximately 150,000 spectators are expected. Based on last year's World Championships in Obersdorf, more than 300 million views of official photos and videos are expected on the event's official social media channels.

As a partner of the event, the STB will:

  • increase the visibility and overall image of Slovenia as an active, green, healthy and sporty destination;
  • increase the visibility and reputation of Slovenia and communicate the I feel Slovenia brand and Slovenian tourism;
  • raise the visibility and reputation of Slovenia as a tourist destination for active holidays and athletes' training,
  • position Slovenia as a host of the most demanding major sporting events.
