Guidelines for a responsible visit of the Triglav National Park

Short days, high snow cover, cold winds and low temperatures are a constant in the higher parts of the Triglav National Park from late autumn to late spring. By following the recommendations of the Triglav National Park, you can contribute to the conservation of nature and help wild animals survive in the winter.

Guidelines for a responsible visit of the Triglav National Park

In winter nature needs even more attention from visitors. What is more, outdoor activities require visitors to take more care for their own safety. In partnership with the VrH Julijcev project, the Triglav National Park has prepared 5 practical tips for responsible and careful nature visiting in the Triglav National Park, which can be followed to help protect the precious nature of Slovenia's only national park.

  1. Let's respect nature's winter rest: Many animals hibernate or sleep in winter. Others seek food and shelter in heavy snow and cold temperatures. Let's be considerate visitors and help the animals to survive the winter as easily as possible.
  2. Let's use public transport: Proper winter equipment and adapted speed are essential for our safety in conditions with high snow cover and on icy roads. Park only in marked car parks that are properly cleared. Forest roads are generally not ploughed in winter. Use public transport where available.
  3. Choose suitable hiking trails in winter: Choosing a suitable hiking trail depends on the current winter and weather conditions. The days are half as long as in summer and the weather conditions are more extreme. Depending on the difficulty, carry enough more winter to keep you safe and warm.
  4. Choose your backcountry skiing routes with the rock ptarmigan and other animals in mind: Ridges, rocky areas and forest edges are the places that provide animals with hard-to-reach food and shelter. Rock ptarmigans especially love ridges and knolls, which are also magnets for touring skiers. Let's choose established routes and help safe the most vulnerable species in the Triglav National Park.
  5. Let us respect the quiet areas, which are an oasis of safety and peace for nature's inhabitants. In the Triglav National Park, quiet areas are used throughout the year to ensure the highest level of tranquillity for the animal world. In the vicinity of the quiet areas, let us be even more attentive to its inhabitants. Avoid them as quickly as possible in silence,  by following the well-maintained mountain paths.
