SOS Proteus Information Centre on Cave Salamanders Opens in Kranj

There are only two cave laboratories with cave olms in the world and one is located in Kranj. It was set up by the biologist Marko Aljančič in 1960 in a small cave called Tular underneath the old city centre. Gregor Aljančič followed in his father’s footsteps and continued the story in the laboratory. This year, he has taken it even further by connecting with the Municipality of Kranj in the form of a public-private partnership. Together, they have created the SOS Proteus Information Centre. The research part will continue to take place in the Tular Cave, and the Information Centre will educate visitors about the life, importance and conservation of the cave salamanders and will also give people the chance to see both white and black salamanders in the aquariums. The President of the Republic of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, is the honorary patron of the opening.

Earlier in November, the European Commission selected Kranj as the winner of the 2023 European Destination of Excellence (EDEN) competition for their pioneering work as a sustainable tourism destination.
