The coastal town of Piran turns into Netflix movie set

Piran is the main filming location of the new Netflix production "The Union", which stars famous Hollywood actors including Halle Berry, Mark Wahlberg and J.K. Simmons. The government of Slovenia contributed 2.5 million euros for the implementation of the film project in Slovenia. The total cost of the preparations and filming in Slovenia is estimated at 10 million euros. What is more, the filming will generate 30,000 overnight stays and more than 340 Slovenians participate in the implementation of the project. In total, 17 filming days are planned in various locations in Slovenia, but the majority of the filming takes place in Piran.

Funds in the amount of 2.5 million euros were provided by the Ministry of Economic Development and Technology, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Culture. Such projects increase the global visibility of Slovenia and play an important role in promoting Slovenia as a filming destination and, consequently, also as a destination for film tourism. In addition, film production can also contribute to the development of less developed regions, creates employment opportunities and develops new competences in various fields. For this particular project, Slovenian co-production teams and a large number of Slovenian film workers were engaged. This means an extraordinary transfer of knowledge, connections and a wealth of experience.

In Slovenia, film production is systematically supported by the Slovenian Film Centre, which also promotes Slovenia as a filming location and, in accordance with the law, implements a monetary reimbursement corresponding to the value of 25 percent of eligible costs directly spent on the production of films and audiovisual works on the territory of the Republic of Slovenia.
