Debeli rtič Landscape Park among the prominent destinations with the INHERITURA sustainable label

The initiative brings together nature parks that are committed to the preservation of natural and cultural heritage and the development of sustainable tourism.

The INHERIT project, co-financed by the Interreg Mediterranean cooperation program, covers the coastal areas of thirteen partner countries on the northern shores of the Mediterranean basin: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cyprus, Montenegro, Gibraltar, Greece, France, Croatia, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Slovenia and Spain. Its mission is to sustainably protect and value the coastal and maritime natural heritage of the Mediterranean.

Next to the Strunjan Landscape Park, Debeli rtič is now the second Slovenian destination in a reputable society, including Brijuni and Mljet landscape parks in Croatia, the underwater town of Pavlopetri-Elafonisos in the Greek Peloponnese, parks in southern France, Malta and neighbouring Italy. In addition to being located next to the sea and commited to sustainable protection of the environment, the holders of the label must also strategically plan how to manage the environment, systematically promote it and thus educate and raise public awareness.

This time, Debeli rtič was the only Slovenian candidate selected, along with four Croatian, two French, Maltese and Greek, and one Italian and one Spanish destinations. After its establishment in 2018, this is the first international recognition for the park, which confirms the sustainable approach to nature conservation. Despite the small area of only 3.4 km2, the Debeli Rtič Landscape Park on the very edge of the Ankaran Bay is characterized by extremely rich vegetation, in which vineyards and olive groves stand out. A flysch cliff rises above the sea, and below the surface we can find seahorses, turtles, lizards and crabs, large sea spiders. As the holder of the INHERITURA sustainable label, Debeli rtič will now form part of the itineraries along the Mediterranean that concentrate on natural parks and sustainability and thus made interesting for visitors from all over the world.
