The Association of Slovenian Historical Cities has two new members

Ravne na Koroškem and Črnomelj are the new members of the Association of Historical Cities of Slovenia, which now has a total of 21 members.

The Association of Historical Cities of Slovenia was established in 2001, at the suggestion of the mayors of Idrija, Koper, Piran, Ptuj, Škofja Loka and Tržič. The idea was to highlight that historical cities are an art treasure and tourist attraction, which can help preserve cultural heritage and enable economic and social development. The initiators of the establishment of the Association of Historic Towns of Slovenia were also among the founding members of the European Association of Historic Towns and Regions. This speaks of the great will and vision and simultaneously awareness that only connected and joint action and exchange of experiences can lead to more successful work, better solutions and thus faster development. During the years of operation, the Association was joined by Brežice, Celje, Jesenice, Kamnik, Kranj, Kostanjevica na Krki, Metlika, Novo mesto, Radovljica, Slovenj Gradec, Slovenske Konjice, Šentjur, Žužemberk and this year the Municipality of Ravne na Koroškem and the Municipality of Črnomelj.

Together with the Slovenian Tourist Board and the historical cities, the association strengthens its role in the field of promotion and marketing of the rich and diverse tourist offer and as such functions as the holder of marketing and development-support activities in domestic and foreign tourism markets. In 2021, two new tourist products were launched: One Town for a Day, which showcases itineraries for independent exploration of historical cities, including culinary stops and outdoor activities and A Spoonful of Culture, which connects cultural events and the culinary offer of the cities.

This year, the Association places great emphasis on including diverse cultural events in the tourist offer of historic cities, as they represent one of the basic motives for the travel of both domestic and foreign tourists, and can at the same time be connected with other main products of Slovenian tourism. Culture and art enrich the experience of the city or country for the tourist and visitor, and at the same time bring the highest added value in tourism. Given that historical cities have about 75% of the highest quality cultural monuments and 70% of all cultural institutions in Slovenia from cultural halls, theaters, galleries, libraries to art exhibitions and museums, the future development of the association looks bright.
