The 43rd traditional pruning of the Old Vine in Maribor
This Saturday, the traditional ceremonial pruning of the Old Vine takes place in Maribor. This is the oldest vine in the world.

The pruning of the vine is the most important task in the vineyard, as it strongly affects growth and yield. But the pruning of the Old Vine is also a significant ceremonial event. On this occasion, the city of Maribor donates the scions of the Old Vine to its partner cities, communities and countries all over the world and chooses the next symbolic caretaker of the vine. This year, the scions will be given to the municipality of Braslovče, the municipality of Gorje, Prof. Franci Zidar, who is the owner of the Lamberg Castle (Vojnik), Hiša Krasna (Lokev), Triglav - Associaton of Slovenes of the Republic of Serbia from Banja Luka (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Institute of Agriculture at University Ciril and Method in Skopje (North Macedonia) and Malta Government Agricultural and Wine-growing Research Institute.
The pruning of the old vine is also a symbolic introduction into the cycle of events in honour of the oldest vine in the world. This year, Tourism Maribor will organize 22 summer evenings in front of the house of the old vine, the putting of a rattle in front of the house of the old vine, a multi-day autumn festival and the traditional St. Martin's Days in November.
