Today, a fraction of Triglav Glacier is leaving for Beijing

The STB has joined the "Mission: Triglav Glacier to Beijing" multi-month environmental awareness project, led by the Olympic Committee of Slovenia (OKS) and Laško Union Brewery and supported by other partners.

The purpose of the campaign is to raise awareness of the disappearance of alpine glaciers and the consequences of global warming for life and winter sports. The campaign, supported by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Office of the President of the Republic of Slovenia, is based on a fragment of ice from the Triglav Glacier, which has been sent to Beijing by the Olympic Committee of Slovenia (OKS) and Laško Union Brewery on the occassion of the 24th Winter Olympic Games, which will begin on February 4, 2022.

The 13,000-kilometer glacier route to Beijing will be fully sustainable. Ciril Komotar, a journalist and vlogger in the field of motoring and mobility, will travel along Europe and stop both in the Olympic capitals and in cities that pride themselves with the most advanced sustainable solutions for energy efficiency and a low-carbon society

You will be able to follow the trip and learn about good practices and tips on what to change in your daily life in order to contribute your part to global change in small steps. On ledenik.olympic.si (currently being translated into English and Chinese) users will find be able to find expert advice in the fields of sustainable transport, sustainable nutrition, environmentally responsible attitude towards mountain areas, efficient energy consumption and efficient waste management. The so-called Olympic Steps will be collected in digital booklets developed by the OKS together with the Center for Energy Efficiency (CEU) at the Jožef Štefan Institute, the Slovenian Mountaineering Association and the Triglav National Park.

At the initiative of the Geographical Institute, the project triggered a wider integration of professional organizations, both in the field of environmental protection and protection of mountain areas, as well as in the field of energy efficiency and also in the field of sustainable tourism. A partner of the project is also Slovenian Tourist Board, widely known as one of the world's most sustainably-oriented tourism boards, which has already implemented numerous good practices in terms of sustainability.
