Meltwater has published a report for the first 6 months of 2021, which reveals that Slovenia and other tourist attractions across Slovenia were mentioned in 30,900 online articles, generating a reach of 66.1 billion potential media contact points, and in 109.9K social media posts.
As per usual, sports-related articles that mentioned Slovenian athletes or event locations in Slovenia were strong drivers of coverage throughout the first 6 months of the year. Especially the Ski Jumping World Championship in Planica as well as the Tour de France and Tour of Slovenia cycling tournaments were reported on in a large number of articles.
Apart from sport-related news, Slovenia was mentioned in several articles for being awarded the European Region of Gastronomy 2021 title as well as holding the second title European Capital of Culture for 2025 after Chemnitz.
Another recurring topics were sustainable tourism and nanotourism with a number of articles listing Slovenia among the top 20 sustainable destinations. Furthermore, the topic of bee conservation was also covered in a few articles and received global media attention thanks to the UNESCO-Guerlain Women for Bees project with Angelina Jolie being announced as the Godmother of the Bees.
In terms of social media, Slovenia as a tourist destination was mentioned in 109,900 social media posts throughout the first six months of 2021. Instagram remained the most popular social media channel with a 68% percent share of voice, followed by Twitter (23%) and blogs (4%). In contrast to previously analysed time periods, Facebook did not rank among the top social media platforms; however, the descrease in the number of Facebook posts was brought about by changes to Facebook’s privacy settings, which restricts the number of Facebook pages monitored. Throughout the analysed period, 58 % of the analysed social media posts featured #slovenia, while #ifeelslovenia also featured prominently with 49%. Once again, #tasteslovenia was used the least with mentions only 1% of all posts.
