The Castles of Posavje

Discover the land between the rivers Mirna, Sava, Krka and Sotla, home to a number of glorious splendours and enchanted castles.

The landscape between the Mirna, Sava, Krka and Sotla rivers is characterized by numerous castles, which have formed an integral part of the everyday lives in the area for centuries. The Castles of Posavje is a project that currently connects six castles (but hopes to include more in the future): Rajhenburg Castle, Brežice Castle, Božidar Jakac Art Museum, Mokrice Castle, Podsreda Castle and Sevnica Castle. The project is considered exceptional and innovative, as it seeks to integrate the castles in the local tourism offer by showcasing their exceptional stories and revealing their new identities: some house museums, some art galleries and some even hotels. Thus, the project was also given The Jakob 2020 Award, which seeks to award innovative stories in the fields of tourism in Slovenia.

A great place to start your journey is at Sevnica Castle, which perches on a sweeping hill top above the old town centre. From here, simply follow the flow of Sava River, which will lead you past Rajhenburg Castle to Brežice castle. At the confluence of two rivers, Sava and Krka, you can opt to continue towards Kostanjevica na Krki or to Mokrice castle. Podsreda castle which connects the Posavje to the Kozjansko, can be reached from different directions.
