Must-visit sports events this winter

Slovenia is known as a great venue for (sports) competitions and events. And this winter abounds with them.

Must-visit sports events this winter

If you combine a number of sports events that take place in Slovenia with the Slovenian cheering enthusiasm, the visit to one of these will surely brighten up dreary winter days. If not for sports, come to Slovenia to experience the atmosphere and warm up for the top sporting event of 2020 – the Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo. Options are numerous, but it’s up to you to decide.

In two weeks, from 22 to 26 January, BMW IBU World Cup Biathlon 2020 will take place on Pokljuka. Pokljuka is a Slovenian plateau, which has become known to the world for the very reason of hosting world-famous biathlon competitions. Set in the Julian Alps, the area represents the largest closed forested area within the Triglav National Park and represents a great place for outdoor activities.

Another notable sports event is the 56th Golden Fox Audi FIS Ski World Cup, which takes place 15 – 16 February on the slopes of the Pohorje Hills, in the immediate vicinity of Slovenia’s second biggest city, Maribor. A week later, 22 – 23 February, Ljubno ob Savinji will host World Cup Ski Jumping Ladies competition. This makes the village of Ljubno the smallest place in the world to host a World Cup race.

March will bring as many as three major sports events, starting with the Snowboarding masters in Rogla, 11 – 12 March, continuing with the men’s FIS Alpine Ski World Cup in Kranjska Gora 14 – 15 March and finishing off with the FIS Ski Flying World Championship 19 –22 March. The finale of the World Cup in Planica is considered to be Slovenia's greatest sporting event, as more than ten thousand visitors flock to the valley at the foot of the Ponce range.

Further information on the events is available here.
