Maribor – Pohorje is a great starting point for those who want to discover the features of Eastern Slovenia. Ski slopes and hiking and mountain trails abound in the green hills of the Eastern-most part of Alpine Slovenia – and all just a stone’s throw from the city. The centre of the city boasts the oldest grapevine in the world.

I highly recommend a visit to the Old Vine House – taste and enjoy the finest wines in the presence of the oldest vine in the world.

TOP Experiences

As a destination, Maribor and Pohorje make up a true treasure trove of gastronomical experiences and socialising opportunities. Taste the fine wines of Styria, even one made from the grapes of a graft of the Old Vine itself. Explore the nature by the Drava river and try one of the countless Pohorje activities.

A treasure trove of viticulture

At Maribor’s Lent Festival by the Drava, the rich tradition of wine production is symbolically presented by the Old Vine. After a guided tour of the Old Vine House you can reward yourself with a tasting of Styrian wines in the plentifully stocked wine cellar. The Old Vine’s Festival is organised in the Old Vine’s honour every year and it is an excellent opportunity to learn about the rich viticultural tradition and the fine selection of the local wine producers and innkeepers.

The Pohorje omelette

Legend has it that the Pohorje omelette was first prepared in the former Railway Home in 1950. The renowned omelette combines ingredients that provide the authentic Pohorje taste. Despite its easy preparation, it will surprise you with its perfect harmony of flavours. The sweet batter complements the lovely acidity of cranberries and the rich milky aroma of the whipped cream. The colour and the aroma of the peppermint liqueur will remind you of the vast spruce forests of Pohorje. This is a dessert worth waiting for as it is perfect when fresh and warm.
