Bees, Slovenians and World Bee Day

On 20 May Slovenia and the rest of the world celebrated the inaugural World Bee Day. Slovenia is home not only to the Carniolan honey bee, but also to Anton Janša, the first beekeeping teacher and the pioneer of modern beekeeping. The love of bees in Slovenia dates far back into the past, and this passion has been passed from generation to generation for decades.

Bees, Slovenians and World Bee Day

Apitourism has become very popular. You can taste chestnut, acacia, linden, spruce, and European silver fir honey – all of them awarded with the Protected Geographical Indication label – or make a toast with the traditional honey liqueur while feasting on honey potica cake.

Visit a beekeeping museum, or try the beekeeping-themed adventures  and educational trips across Slovenia with trained api-tourist guides. The most popular experience at the moment, along with a honey massage and honey sauna, is the comprehensive Api well-being  programme. Appreciate the calming buzz, air filled with the aroma of honey, and the feeling of warm wax and honey on your skin while you meditate and enjoy yourself.

Based on strict criteria, the apitourism providers receive a sign with one, two or three bees. Professionalism, innovativeness, training possibilities, food services, an entertainment programme, accommodations in some places, and of course homemade honey products everywhere distinguish the best providers.
