One of Slovenia's best kept secrets was uncovered by Lonely Planet when publishing it as one of the continent’s hotspots this year. And it deserves this title: the Vipava Valley is not only breath-taking, it also boasts high-quality wines and in recent years also delicious craft beers; it is well-known for superb food and countless activities for all visitors.
The Vipava Valley is surrounded by the steep hillsides of the nearby plateaus; its small villages clustered around vineyards and orchards will charm you at first sight. But there is so much more than that.
Wine production in the valley dates back as far as Roman times, so the region’s high-quality wines don’t come as a surprise; what might take you aback is the fact that the Vipava Valley is home to most of Slovenia’s indigenous sorts. The Vipava locals will serve up some tasty food to go with their fine wine. Recently, several craft breweries have popped up, to the delight of beer lovers.
