The Best Innovations in Slovenian Tourism of 2017

The first beer fountain on the planet, in Žalec, tucked amidst the fields of hops in the Savinja Valley, and the largest interactive exhibition on karst phenomena in history, presenting the karst and its caves in Postojna Cave Park, are the two winners of the Sejalec award for innovations in Slovenian tourism.

The Best Innovations in Slovenian Tourism of 2017

Green, active and healthy Slovenia is a land of endless five star experiences; some of them are among the most innovative in the world. Last year, the town of Žalec in the Savinja Valley, located between Slovenia’s capital, Ljubljana, and Celje, the City of Counts, caused an unexpected flood of mentions in media around the world. As the Lonely Planet guide said, “This is the first beer fountain in the world.” The Mayor, Janko Kos, and his team had implemented their bold idea; today, the Beer Fountain “Green Gold”, named after a species of high quality indigenous hops which grow in the Savinja Valley and are exported all over the world, is already a famous tourist attraction. Designed in the form of hops´ flowers, the fountain offers visitors six types of beer, including the local star beer Kukec as well as the unique green beer. Adjacent to the fountain is the local market with certified Green Gold products, and the restaurants, inns and pubs in the surrounding area offer the Tastes of Green Gold.

The Slovenian Tourist Board also selected another innovation which contributes to the greater recognisability of Slovenia as a tourist destination: EXPO Postojna Cave Karst is the world's largest exhibition on caves and the karst, created in cooperation with national experts from different institutions. Visitors learn about karst phenomena with the help of various interactive tools, including a three-dimensional model of the karst area and its mysterious underground regions. They can also admire all the superlatives and milestones attributed to Postojna Cave during 200 years of organised tourism on the Wall of Fame. A tour of Postojna Cave is an unforgettable experience, and equally awe-inspiring is to fully comprehend the significance of its creation. Special attention is given to children, who are interactively guided through the exhibition by the olm and the slenderneck beetle.
