Lipica: Discover the Birthplace of the Lipizzaner

Mention Lipizzaner horses and many travellers immediately think of Vienna. But the story of one of Europe’s most famous horse breeds begins several hundred kilometres to the south, in Slovenia’s Karst region. Here, in Lipica, the original stud farm was founded in 1580 – and more than four centuries later, Lipizzaners are still bred and trained in the landscape that gave them their name. This September brings a particularly good reason to discover their story, as Lipica celebrates 446 years of equestrian tradition with its annual Stud Farm Day on 6 September.

The Story Starts in Slovenia

The Lipizzaner is one of Europe’s oldest cultural horse breeds, and its history is inseparable from Lipica. The stud farm was established by Habsburg Archduke Charles II in 1580, when horses were being bred here for the imperial court. The breed that developed over the following centuries would eventually take its name from Lipica itself.

Today, Lipica remains the world’s largest Lipizzaner stud farm, home to more than 300 horses spread across an estate of over 300 hectares. But what makes the place particularly compelling for visitors is that this is not simply a historic site. Horses are still bred, trained and cared for here, allowing travellers to encounter a centuries-old tradition as part of everyday life.

That continuity is also internationally recognised. Since 2022, the traditions of Lipizzan horse breeding have been inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The multinational inscription brings together Slovenia, Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Hungary, Italy, Romania and Slovakia, reflecting a tradition that has crossed borders while maintaining distinctive local practices.

More Than the Famous White Horses

The Lipizzaner’s story is also more nuanced than its familiar image might suggest. Although mature Lipizzaners are best known for their striking light coats, the horses are generally born dark and gradually become lighter as they mature.

Their importance extends well beyond appearance or classical dressage. UNESCO highlights the centuries of accumulated knowledge involved in breeding, training, riding and carriage driving, as well as the close relationship between horses, people and the landscapes in which the tradition developed. 

At Lipica, that landscape is part of the experience. The stud farm sits in Slovenia’s Karst region, where open pastures, tree-lined avenues and dry-stone walls form the backdrop to the horses’ daily lives. It makes Lipica as much a cultural landscape as an equestrian attraction – and an easy addition to a wider journey through one of Slovenia’s most distinctive regions. On Sunday, 6 September 2026, Lipica marked its 446th anniversary with Lipica Stud Farm Day, a full-day celebration of Lipizzaner horses, equestrian culture and the connections between Europe’s historic stud farms.
