Slovenian Spas: Much More Than a Relaxing Thermal Break

Slovenia’s natural spas and health resorts have long offered far more than bathing, relaxation and traditional wellness experiences. By developing modern programmes, sports infrastructure, healthy cuisine and sustainable practices, they are evolving into comprehensive wellbeing destinations where physical activity, recovery, high-quality food and contact with nature come together.

The diverse offer of Slovenia’s natural spas and health resorts appeals not only to guests seeking rest and relaxation, but also to active travellers, families and professional and amateur athletes. At the heart of this development is an increasingly holistic approach to health: wellbeing does not begin and end in a thermal pool, but also encompasses nutrition, physical activity, regeneration and a responsible relationship with the environment.

From Garden to Plate

Fresh, seasonal and high-quality food is becoming an increasingly important part of the modern spa experience. The Organic Garden at Otočec demonstrates how closely local food production, gastronomy and the guest experience can be connected. It was created to provide the kitchens of Otočec Castle, Hotel Sport Otočec, Šmarješke Toplice Spa and Dolenjske Toplice Spa with the freshest possible ingredients grown on site.

Covering approximately 1,500 square metres, the garden produces a wide variety of vegetables, fruit and herbs – from potatoes, courgettes, tomatoes and peppers to berries, lemon balm and plants used in herbal blends and drinks for fasting, detox and cleansing programmes. Gardeners and chefs work together to plan the planting, ensuring that production reflects the needs of the kitchens and their seasonal menus.

The garden is not only a place of production, but also an experience in its own right. Guests can learn about the plants, enjoy homemade herbal drinks or pick strawberries, raspberries and vegetables themselves, which the chefs can then incorporate into their meals. Seven beehives support pollination, while carefully designed beds and homemade humus fertiliser produced from plant matter and farmyard manure contribute to a more sustainable approach.

The Organic Garden reflects a broader shift in spa tourism: away from simply offering services and towards authentic, participatory experiences that help guests better understand where their food comes from and why seasonal, locally grown ingredients matter.

A Destination for Training, Preparation and Recovery

Slovenian spas are also playing an increasingly important role in the world of sport. Alongside recreational activities, some provide professional facilities for training camps, performance preparation and specialist sports rehabilitation.

Terme Čatež is a notable example. Through the planned development of its sports infrastructure, it has become one of Slovenia’s leading destinations for sports training camps. By the end of July 2026, it had already hosted 59 teams from a variety of sports, with approximately the same number expected to arrive by the end of the year.

Its football pitches, built in accordance with FIFA and UEFA standards, are particularly important. Heated with thermal water, they can be used throughout the year and provide reliable training conditions regardless of the season. The sports facilities also include an Olympic-size swimming pool at the Summer Thermal Riviera, used by swimmers for training camps.

This combination of high-quality sports infrastructure, accommodation, thermal water and recovery facilities enables teams to bring training, rest and physical regeneration together in one destination.

Holistic Wellbeing, the Slovenian Way

The Organic Garden at Otočec and the sports facilities at Terme Čatež represent two different yet complementary aspects of Slovenia’s spa offer. One focuses on local food production, healthy cuisine and genuine contact with nature; the other on movement, professional training and recovery.

Together, they illustrate just how broad the modern spa experience has become. Thermal water remains an essential foundation, but it is increasingly complemented by experiences that help guests live more actively, more consciously and in greater balance.

At Slovenia’s spas and natural health resorts, taking a break does not necessarily mean remaining still. It may begin with a morning training session, continue with a meal prepared using ingredients picked from the garden that same day, and include time in nature, professionally guided recovery or simply an opportunity to restore balance between body and mind.
