Škofja Loka Bring Together Local Flavours, Heritage and Craftsmanship

A new guided culinary experience, Tasty Škofja Loka Steps, is now available in Škofja Loka, taking visitors through the medieval town centre on a journey of local flavours, stories and traditional crafts. Lasting approximately four hours, the experience combines a walk through the town, a five-course menu with selected drinks, and an introduction to Škofja Loka’s culinary and craft heritage.

From Loška Smojka to a Castle Cocktail

The culinary journey begins at the Škofja Loka Tourist Information Point, where a guide welcomes visitors and introduces the experience. The first culinary stop is Hotel Lonca, where guests are served a contemporary interpretation of loška smojka, a traditional local dish. It is accompanied by pear water with brandy made from the traditional tepka pear, reflecting the fruit-growing heritage of the Škofja Loka area and the afternoon snack once enjoyed by local farmers.

At Hotel Loka, visitors are served a trio of traditional loški kruhki made with local ingredients: aged cheese, trout spread with trout caviar, and game salami. The selection is complemented by homemade juices and spirits.

The route continues to the DUO Škofja Loka Arts and Crafts Centre, where participants learn about the production of wooden moulds used to make traditional loški kruhki under the guidance of master craftswoman Petra Plestenjak. The craft experience also includes a tasting of the decorated honey breads and a small souvenir to remember the visit.

The main course is served at Pr’ Pepet restaurant. The Loška skleda, or Škofja Loka bowl, is prepared with seasonal vegetables, local grains and other ingredients sourced from nearby producers, and is accompanied by a locally brewed beer. The sweet part of the journey follows at Homan Café, where visitors can taste the loška rezina, a dessert created especially for the experience by Julija Prevc.

The culinary journey concludes at Škofja Loka Castle. At the Castle Café, guests are served a cocktail made with the herbal drink Kloštergajst, whose story draws on the history of the Capuchin monastery and the local herbal tradition.

A Contemporary Interpretation of the Local Food Landscape

The culinary concept was developed under the mentorship of chef Primož Pintar from Gostišče Tolc and draws on the knowledge and experience of the participating providers. Together, they explored the culinary heritage of Škofja Loka and transformed traditional dishes into a contemporary gastronomic experience.

The dishes are based on seasonal, locally sourced ingredients and short supply chains. In addition to food, the experience introduces visitors to the people, natural environment, traditional skills and cultural heritage that have shaped life in the Škofja Loka region over the centuries.

A distinctive feature of the product is the way it brings together restaurateurs, craftspeople, guides, farmers and suppliers in a shared destination story. The guided walk allows visitors to discover Škofja Loka at a slower and more personal pace – through its streets, local providers and flavours.

The experience lasts approximately four hours and is intended for groups of four to 16 people. It is available in Slovenian and English with advance booking. Vegetarian and vegan options can also be arranged.

A European Project Rooted in Local Partnerships

The experience was developed with the financial support of the TASTE – Transformative Approaches for Sustainable Food in Tourism project, as part of the activities of RRA Podravje – Maribor, a Slovenian partner in the TASTE project. The project promotes sustainable, innovative and resilient approaches at the intersection of tourism and food, while strengthening cooperation between tourism businesses, local producers, hospitality providers and other stakeholders.

The initiative to apply for the project and develop the experience came from the Municipality of Škofja Loka. Its development involves local tourism and hospitality providers, development organisations, craftspeople, farmers, producers and other suppliers. The Tasty Steps of Škofja Loka project was selected among the top 40 out of a total of 104 European projects submitted.
