One of Slovenia’s Most Scenic Cycling Routes Links Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj

A new cycling route connecting two of its most iconic alpine destinations – Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj – has officially opened.

The new route is one of the country's most significant cycling infrastructure projects in recent years, strengthening sustainable mobility while creating an exceptional new experience for visitors exploring the Julian Alps by bike.

Nearly 28 Kilometres of Continuous Cycling Between Two Alpine Lakes

The newly completed section between Bled and Bohinjska Bistrica is approximately 20 kilometres long. Together with the existing cycling route leading to Lake Bohinj, cyclists can now enjoy almost 28 kilometres of continuous cycling between Slovenia's two most famous alpine lakes.

For most of its length, the route is separated from motor traffic, following the Sava Bohinjka River through forests, meadows and picturesque alpine landscapes. The result is a safe, family-friendly ride that combines outstanding scenery with easy access to two of Slovenia's leading outdoor destinations.

The route forms part of both the national and the Gorenjska regional cycling networks, encouraging visitors to discover the area in a more sustainable way while also improving everyday mobility for local communities.

Two cyclist rest areas have also been created as part of the project, one at the historic St. Hemma Ironworks and another near the Grmečica Waterfall. They were funded through the Interreg Italy–Slovenia ADRIONCYCLETOUR project and the Municipality of Bohinj. A smart cycling station by Lake Bled is also planned as the next phase of development.

A Major Investment in Sustainable Tourism

Construction of the project began in 2022 and represents an investment of almost €25 million. It was delivered through close cooperation between the Slovenian Infrastructure Agency and the municipalities of Bled and Bohinj, with support from the Ministry of Cohesion and Regional Development, the Regional Development Agency of Gorenjska (BSC Kranj) and other partners. Funding was provided by the Republic of Slovenia, the European Regional Development Fund and the two municipalities.

Cycling at the Heart of Slovenia's Outdoor Story

The opening of the new route coincided with the Tour de France, reinforcing Slovenia's growing reputation as one of Europe's leading cycling destinations. While the country continues to produce world-class champions, it is also investing heavily in cycling infrastructure that makes exploring its landscapes safer, easier and more enjoyable for visitors of all ages.

Regional leaders described the route as much more than a transport connection. It links communities, creates a unified tourism area between Bled and Bohinj, and opens new opportunities for sustainable tourism products and local businesses. They also highlighted its importance for improving road safety and quality of life for residents.

Temporary Diversion Until Late August

A short section of the local road between Bohinjska Bela and Obrne remains temporarily closed due to landslide remediation works. A clearly signposted diversion is available for cyclists, while the route is expected to become fully uninterrupted once construction is completed, currently planned for the end of August 2026.

The new cycling connection marks another important milestone in Slovenia's commitment to active, sustainable tourism, offering visitors one of the country's most scenic and accessible cycling experiences between two of its most celebrated natural attractions.
