The Craft Heritage Meets 300 Million Years of Earth’s Story in Tržič

In the foothills of the Karavanke Alps, Tržič reveals a layered identity shaped by craftsmanship, geology, and pristine nature. Once renowned far beyond its borders as a town of shoemakers and skilled artisans, today Tržič invites visitors to explore a destination where cultural heritage and deep geological time intersect in remarkable ways.

Among its most striking natural features is the Dovžan Gorge, a protected natural monument of global geological importance. More than a scenic walk, the gorge offers a rare encounter with Earth’s distant past.

Rock formations dating back around 300 million years tell the story of an ancient tropical sea, with fossil discoveries – such as the globally significant Schwagerina carniolica – providing insight into prehistoric marine life.

A well-maintained educational trail leads visitors through this dramatic landscape, passing towering rock formations, waterfalls of the Tržiška Bistrica River, and the iconic Devil’s Bridge. The route also includes the historic Born tunnels carved into steep cliffs and views of the alpine village of Dolina, known for its preserved traditional architecture. The four-hour trail combines natural beauty with interpretation, making it accessible to both families and more adventurous explorers.

For those seeking active experiences, the area offers a range of outdoor activities – from scenic viewpoints and family-friendly learning paths to climbing routes on the striking rock formations of Borove peči and the mysterious Kušpegar Towers, remnants of an ancient coral reef.

Tržič’s geological richness also comes to life through events such as Minfos International Days of Minerals Fossils and Environment, taking place 9–10 May 2026. This long-standing international festival gathers exhibitors and enthusiasts from around the world, showcasing minerals, fossils, and jewelry in all shapes and colors. Beyond the exhibition, visitors can join guided tours of local heritage sites – including the Šentanj Mine and Dovžan Gorge – attend lectures, and participate in creative and educational workshops.

Together, these experiences position Tržič as a destination that goes beyond the expected—where stories of traditional craftsmanship meet the deep-time stories of our planet, offering visitors a journey that is both culturally rich and profoundly elemental.
