Best Cultural Heritage Town in Europe for 2026, Ptuj Celebrates 650 Years

When we speak of Ptuj, we speak in superlatives. Not only is it Slovenia’s oldest town, but in 2026 it also holds the prestigious title of Best Cultural Heritage Town in Europe.

This year marks another milestone for Ptuj: 650 years since it was granted its first city statute. The anniversary offers a compelling reason for visitors and media alike to rediscover one of Slovenia’s most atmospheric historic destinations.

At the heart of Ptuj’s rich story is the Ptuj Castle, home to the Ptuj-Ormož Regional Museum. Perched above the town, the castle houses one of the most extensive collections of musical instruments in this part of Europe, alongside lavishly decorated halls, historic weaponry, and ethnological treasures. Visitors can also explore the mystical world of the Kurent – Slovenia’s iconic carnival figure – whose traditions are inscribed on UNESCO’s cultural heritage list.

A stroll through the old town reveals layers of history at every turn. The Kurent House offers an interactive introduction to this unique cultural symbol, while nearby landmarks such the Ptuj City Theatre as the Orpheus Monument – a  Roman tombstone which among other things served as a pillory in the Middle Ages – tell stories spanning millennia.

Rising above the town is the recently renovated Ptuj City Tower, the bell tower of St. George’s Church. Visitors can climb to the top to discover a remarkable mechanical clock with a 21-metre pendulum and enjoy sweeping views of the town and its surroundings – earning the tower its nickname, the “guardian of time.”

For a more contemporary indulgence, stop by the Xococ Boutique Chocolate Shop where handcrafted pralines offer a delicious taste of Ptuj to take home.

Beyond the historic centre, the Panorama Archaeological Site reveals the remains of ancient Poetovio, once a significant Roman city. Walking paths lead visitors across what was once a vibrant Roman district, bringing the town’s 2,000-year history vividly to life.

With its blend of Roman legacy, medieval charm, and living traditions, Ptuj offers compelling storytelling opportunities for international media and travellers seeking meaningful, immersive experiences.
